Flies are among the most common insects visiting and pollinating flowers. We distinguish Bombylidae and Syrphidae from others flies because they are among the commonest pollinators and they have characteristic behavior and sucking mouths.
Bombyllidae are ectothermic and fast flyers, they have rigid, long and narrow proboscis, and feed on nectar and pollen. The most representative genus is Bombylius.
Syrphidae is a big family highly variable in body size. They are wasp and bee mimics from which you can usually distingishing at the flowers by looking at their characteristic bigger eyes, shorter antennas and the present of just two wings. They are efficient foragers feeding on nectar and pollen. Some of them are endothermic and as a group they are active in wide day and seasonals periods. The most representative genus is Eristalis.
